Five people, including four women, sustained injuries in a clash between two groups in Ahmedpur Darewal village,Sirsa,on Thursday night. The groups clashed over possession of village land, which the government had recently declared surplus. The injured alleged that the rival group led by Shrichand opened fire at them.

Ajaypal, whose condition is serious, has been referred to Sirsa civil hospital, while the rest are being treated at a hospital in Dabwali. The state government had recently declared a 10-acre plot in the village as surplus. According to Ajaypal, the land belonged to his grandfather. Ajaypal and his family had been living in a house constructed in the fields located adjacent to the same land.

Shrichand’s group had been ploughing the same piece of land for several years. Both the groups had filed court cases claiming possession of the land. Ajaypal alleged that after the state government’s order, the revenue officials had to do demarcate the land on Thursday, but none of them turned up and police officials, who were deployed at the spot to assist them, also went back.

“The matter is being investigated,” police officials said.
