The government has granted one-year visa to self-exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen after going through her previous stay record in India.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) decided to extend the writer’s visa for another year after giving her a two-month temporary visa till a fact-check was done on her stay here. Although she had applied for a five-year visa, the government decided to grant only a year’s extension.

Taslima, who also has Sweden’s citizenship, has been travelling outside the country, and government officials wanted to calculate and factor in the duration of her stay in India over the last 10 years before taking a decision, a senior home ministry official said.

Taslima, who has been staying in India since 2004 in the wake of death threats from Muslim fundamentalist outfits, had applied for a renewal of her resident permit on June 17.

She had met Home Minister Rajnath Singh last month and was assured a longer permit. She earlier told The Indian Express that she had applied for a five-year visa after the NDA government came to power.
