The Haryana government told the Assembly on Wednesday that Brahmins,Rajputs,Khatris,Punjabis and Mahajans will receive the benefit of reservation enjoyed by people belonging to weaker sections of Haryana.

“Also, people belonging to the general category, who are economically weaker and are not getting any kind of benefit of reservation, will also get reservation under this category,” Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said.

He was replying to Congress MLA Venod Sharma’s query on reservations being given to people from economically backward classes (EWC).

Sharma also raised the point that no clear instructions have been issued regarding castes that can avail reservation benefits enjoyed by financially weaker sections. In reply,Parliamentary Affairs Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala said: “Haryana Backward Classes Commission has recommended that at least 10 per cent reservation be given to financially weaker people belonging to general category. The benefit of reservation will only be given to financially weaker sections of general category as people belonging to Scheduled Castes, backward classes and special backward classes are already getting benefit of quota.”
