In a suspected case of honour killing,a couple was allegedly lynched by the girls family in Rohtak district of Haryana on Wednesday evening. While the girl,Nidhi Barak,20,was reportedly killed in public view and cremated, the boy,Dharmender Barak,23,was reportedly beaten up,his arms and legs broken, and then beheaded. The youths body was then dumped outside his house in the village.
Both Nidhi and Dharmender belonged to the Jat community and were residents of Gharnavati village in Kalanaur,Rohtak district. The incident came to light when one of the villagers informed the police at about 5:30 pm. Till late night,Dharmenders family had not lodged a formal complaint with the police. The police registered a case on the statement of one of its officials.
According to the police,Nidhi was pursuing a fine arts course in Rohtak, while Dharmender was doing an ITI diploma course in Rohtak. Nidhis family had reportedly warned Dharmender a few times in the past. Last week too, they had warned him after they reportedly caught him near their house.
On Tuesday morning,Nidhi and Dharmender reportedly left their homes and did not return. According to reports, they had decided to get married. Nidhis family finally managed to contact her on Wednesday morning and persuaded her to return home, reportedly with the assurance that they would not harm her or Dharmender.
Our preliminary information has revealed that when Dharmender and Nidhi returned to the village on Wednesday evening, they were taken to Nidhis home by her family. They were both assaulted by her relatives. Nidhis family first lynched her and then cremated her. Then they broke Dharmenders arms and legs and beheaded him. A few of them then threw his body in front of Dharmenders house, said DSP Anil Kumar.
Nidhis father,Billu, has been arrested, while the rest of her family members, including her mother, uncles, brothers and cousins are reported to be missing from the village.
We managed to recover Nidhis remains from her pyre. We have taken the boys body for a post-mortem examination which will be performed tomorrow, said the DSP.
A preliminary examination of the youths body has reportedly revealed that he received severe blows on his arms and legs and sustained multiple fractures. His broken limbs were clearly visible. He must have been assaulted for at least half-an-hour by many people before he was beheaded, said an investigating officer.
Senior police officers of Rohtak district visited the village, but none of the residents were ready to volunteer any information.
