Girl attempts suicide to force friend to marry,dies of burns

A 22-year-old Jalandhar resident,who allegedly attempted suicide to pressurise her boyfriend to marry her,died on Monday. Police said that Ekta of New Lasuri Mohalla area in the city made the suicide bid on Sunday after allegedly being egged on by another woman in her locality.

Police have now booked Ekta’s alleged boyfriend,Vicky,on charges of cheating and abetment to suicide while a case has also been registered against her neighbour,Vindhu.

Police said that Ekta and Vicky had been in a relationship for around five years and the girl wanted to marry him. While her parents had agreed to their alliance,his,however,allegedly made excuses every time the topic was brought up.

Ekta had lodged a police complaint that Vicky had promised to marry her but was now refusing. Police said that on Sunday,Vindu allegedly encouraged Ekta to attempt suicide as a way of putting pressure on Vicky to marry her.

The 22-year-old then doused herself in petrol and set herself on fire; she received 80 per cent burns and was admitted to hospital. She succumbed to her injuries on Monday. ACP RPS Sandhu said that a case has been registered against both woman who incited her and her boyfriend. While Vindhu has been arrested,Vicky is still at large.

The ACP added that Ekta had recorded her statement in the presence of a magistrate before her death and had blamed Vindu for inciting her.
