Five Tamil Nadu migrants including a nine-year old were found brutally murdered in a sugarcane field at Kollegal taluk in Chamarajnagara district on Monday night.
The deceased included a couple Kashi (38), Shivamma (32), along with a mother Rajamma (38) and her nine-year old daughter Roja. The police also found a body of another person identified as Rajendran (40) on the field. According to the officials, who are still present at the crime scene in Arale village, the victims were native of Bhawani taluk of Erode district in Tamil Nadu and they were employed for harvesting sugarcane crops in a private field for the past 10 days.
Preliminary enquiry by the authorities suggest that the murder might have taken place owing to the increasing proximity between Rajendran and Rajamma to which the elders in the group had objected earlier. When the elders reportedly found the couple together on Monday night, they attacked them. “When Shivamma and Kashi tried to intervene even they too were attacked and killed by the mob,” a police official said.
“But it is just preliminary finding its not conclusive, there might be another angle to it. We are yet to examine the actual witnesses. Unfortunately, all 15 labourers who worked on the same field till yesterday have either left the village overnight or have gone into hiding including the labour contractor. So far we have discovered blood stains in the temporary hut on the field and a knife which might have been used for the crime. We are dispatching them for forensic examination, the police added.
Police also claim that they have spotted four-wheeler tire tracks leading to a sugarcane field, however it is yet to be established if the vehicle or occupants had any links to abet the crime. A case has been registered at Kollegal rural police station.
