He may be in line of fire with Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal ordering an independent inquiry by a retired high court judge, but Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka has garnered huge support from the Shiromani Akali Dal,which Thursday labelled the book procurement scam a “minor issue” and instead trained its guns on the Opposition Congress.

A statement issued by SAD legislators lashed out at PCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa “for highlighting the minor issue of procurement of books” and diverting the “attention of the masses from the multi-crore scams of the UPA government.”

The MLAs also demanded an apology from Congress spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira “for his immature and childish statements against the dignity of judiciary and other constitutional institutions of India”. They said that Khaira has tried to make the mockery of the judiciary by questioning the authority of Justice (Retd) A N Jindal to probe the issue of procurement of books. They advised the Congress to demand a probe from the UNO instead of CBI,which is a mere puppet in the hands of Congress.

The SAD leaders asserted that the Congress is the mother of all scams and expressed sympathy for Bajwa for his helplessness and “prayed for his early recovery from the grief of the zila parishad and panchayat samiti poll debacle.

Interestingly, even as the legislators continued to harp on the scams of the UPA government, they remained silent on allegations levelled by Khaira against the retired judge.
