The Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Thursday registered an FIR naming eight persons as accused, including Hiranandani Developers co-founder and managing director Niranjan Hiranandani, acting on a complaint by a 28-year old woman from Powai.

On Wednesday, Bombay High Court had directed the Crime Branch to register an FIR on the woman’s complaint. Besides Hiranandani, the others named are Powai senior police inspector Y L Jadhav, two men identified as Sanjay Sansare and Prakash Wadkar, and four others allegedly identified by the victim as “Hiranandani’s men” — Chandrajit Sachinanda, Lalshankar Pandey, Shashikant Sadke and Padmakar Mane.

Sansare, Wadkar and Jadhav have been charged under IPC sections for rape under 376 (1), gangrape under 376 (2) (g), and outraging a woman’s modesty under 354 (1). Other IPC sections applied in the case include 506 (criminal intimidation), 450 and 451 (house trespass), section 452 (house trespass with preparation to hurt, assault or wrongful restraint and section 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class).

Confirming the registration of the FIR, JCP (Law and Order) Sadanand Date said, “We have taken up the complaint for investigation and Senior Police Inspector Gopika Jahagirdar will be the Investigating officer. We will ensure fair and expeditious probe.”

“It’s the complainant’s allegation against Hiranandani that has been recorded. She has named him as an accused at whose behest everyone acted. And we will now look into her complaints,” said an officer.

When contacted, Hiranandani replied through a text message that he was not aware about the FIR, and that he did not wish to comment until he had read it.
