A Delhi Police commando, who was part of the Presidents security detail, was suspended after senior officers caught him using a defective AK-47 assault rifle that went off while he was being questioned on Monday morning.
Police said senior officers have been monitoring Amar Singh for the past few days after he was found carrying the service weapon despite knowing that it was defective.
When a couple of officers were questioning him in the morning, the AK-47 misfired. No one was injured, police said.
The commando was immediately suspended and a departmental inquiry was initiated to probe the motive behind carrying a malfunctioning weapon that went off without anybody pulling the trigger.
The incident took place moments before the commando was to go to the airport with the security team for President Pranab Mukherjee, who returned to the Capital in the afternoon from his maiden tour of West Bengal after taking up the countrys top job.
Our officers received information that the Delhi Police commando was knowingly using a defective weapon. Some of his colleagues had passed this information. He was under surveillance for the past few days. Around 8.40 am on Monday, some senior officers went to the armoury when he was collecting his weapon and asked him about it. The gun fired on its own, an officer said.
Since it is an automatic weapon, the officers expected the worse. They feared that there more bullets will get fired. But it stopped after a single shot, the officer said.
The commando was suspended then and there, followed by formalities to start departmental proceedings against him.
Since he was attached to a sensitive unit such as the Presidents security, the inquiry will look into all angles. Senior officers will investigate the case and try to find out why he was knowingly using a defective weapon and the motive,if any.
