Sarabjit Singh’s family was flown to their home in a helicopter ahead of the arrival of his body from Pakistan on Thursday. A temporary helipad was created at Bhagwanpur village near Bhikhiwind where the helicopter carrying Sarabjit’s wife Sukhpreet, sister Dalbir Kaur and daughters Swapandeep and Poonam flew in from Amritsar.

“I have lost everything,” Dalbir said as she got off the chopper. “I failed to bring the father of his children back home. I want to know why he had to die,” she said, breaking down in tears.

BSF,police and civill administration officials were waiting for the family at the helipad, ready to drop them to their home in Bhikhiwind. Hundreds of villagers from the area rushed towards the open field to see the family as the chopper touched down.

In Bhikhiwind,a tent had been put up,streets had been cleaned, and politicians had congregated, all ready with lengthy speeches. As the family drove to their home in an official SUV,villagers thronged the rooftops to watch.

Strong words were spoken against Pakistan and the Indian government’s failure to ensure Sarabjit’s freedom. No shops in the village had opened in the morning after news of his death came in. Some people gathered outside the gurdwara and protested against Pakistan. Effigies representing the Pakistani and Indian governments were burnt.
