The biology teacher of a government girls school in Dharamkot has been suspended after he allegedly came to school in an inebriated state but fled on hearing of a surprise inspection being carried out by Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka. The inspection was conducted in two other government schools in the vicinity.

Sukhwant Singh,a teacher at the Government High Senior Secondary School (girls),Kot-Isey-Khan,Dharamkot,who allegedly has a drinking problem, had come to the school ‘drunk’ when an acquaintance warned him of the minister’s inspection. He refused to return to the school even after Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka called and directed him to do so. He was immediately suspended on the spot.

“I got information from my source that a teacher in a particular school regularly comes after consuming liquor and even takes classes in that condition. But as soon as we reached the nearby boys Government High School, someone told him about the raid and he fled. We even called him up and asked him to return and waited for an hour but he never came back. I ordered his suspension on the spot,” Maluka told The Indian Express. He added that even the school principal had admitted that the teacher had a drinking problem.

Sources also told The Indian Express that despite repeated complaints by the girl students and staff members of the teacher’s drinking habit, officiating principal Gurdip Singh never forwarded the complaints to the district education officer (DEO).

“We complained to the principal on numerous times about the way he behaves after drinking in class and also asked the students to do so. The girls even went to the principal many times but he always asked for another chance and never took any stringent action against Sukhwant Singh. In the end,we staff members were also asked to keep quiet and we had no other option,” said a staff member of the school,on condition of anonymity.

Confirming the incident,Pritam Singh Dhaliwal, district education officer,Moga, said: “I found out that the teacher used to take classes when he was drunk and even students have complained about him to the principal many times but till date I have not received any complaint from the concerned principal. This is simply intolerable and principals should immediately forward us such complaints from students.” Maluka also raided the Government Senior Secondary School,Baghapurana (boys) and the Government High School (boys),Kot-Isey-Khan.
