To save on time, Home Minister Rajnath Singh had taken a helicopter to Gurgaon to attend a CRPF function on Thursday. However, the chopper could not land due to bad weather. Singh had to return and drive back. He reached the destination two hours late. Meanwhile, in the absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Singh will do the honours of inaugurating the official functions relating to the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Jawaharlal Nehru on Friday.
Jitendra Singh showed promptness in convening a meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC) on November 19 soon after assuming charge of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. But it was more like making a virtue out of necessity. It is mandatory for the full NEC to meet at least once in a calendar year. With half of November already gone, there was little option but to convene the meeting soon. Meanwhile, the annual conference of police chiefs, being held at Guwahati, will have, for the first time, a session on North-East policies which will be attended by chief ministers of all the northeastern states. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address that session.
The showpiece event of the Congress party to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, an international conference, is happening on November 17 and 18. On the same days, the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library is also organising a conference on Nehru. Some guests, like Sunil Khilnani, are listed as speakers at both places. The fear is that some people, especially academics, might prefer to attend the NMML function. The Congress has only itself to blame. The NMML prepares its calendar almost a year in advance.
