Former Haryana Assistant Advocate General Anuradha Bali alias Fiza followed through on her threat of filing a case against now-estranged husband Chand Mohammad and formally levelled charges of ‘rape, hurting religious sentiments, cheating, defamation and criminal intimidation’ against him.
In a criminal complaint filed before Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jatinder Singh Aulakh and others,Fiza claimed that he ‘betrayed, used, blackmailed, intimidated and ditched’ her under the garb of ‘religion and marriage’.
Seeking registration of an FIR under Section 376 (Rape),420 (Cheating),295-A (Hurting religious sentiments),500 (Defamation) and 506 (Criminal Intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code,Fiza said that she was devastated by Chand’s betrayal. “I have lost everything and am unable to face society,” she said.
Apprehending that Chand along with his family may try to run away abroad to avoid legal action,Fiza has also sought security with immediate effect since she feared he may try to harm her.
Fiza submitted that she came into contact with the 43-year-old Chand in 2004 when he was elected to the Haryana Legislative Assembly for the fourth time. She said that he pursued her relentlessly, even visiting her residence in Sector 48-C,Mohali,till she relented and married him in December 2008.
“Chand started showing that he is in love with me but I refused the proposal and kept on doing so as he was married to Seema Bishnoi and had three children,” she recalled.
Fiza said that Chand claimed that he was not on good terms with his wife and that his son Siddarath even used to ‘beat’ him. “Chand kept on convincing me and went to such an extent that he told me that he would die if I would not marry him as he was suffering a lot of mental torture and agony at the hands of his wife and children,” she said adding that he had even threatened to shoot himself.
She disclosed that Chand finally managed to convince her that he was not happy with his first marriage, following which they both converted to Islam and got married as per Islamic rites on December 2.
She said that Chand had left her in the care of two of his close aides,Devi Lal and Rana,on January 28 and that she had been awaiting his return when she was shocked to see his statement in the media that he loved his first wife and children and denied his relationship with her. She further alleged that she had received threatening calls from Chand’s family ever since she started protesting against Chand.
Meanwhile, the Mohali SSP has ordered an inquiry into the complaint and asked Superintendent of Police (City) Varinder Pal Singh to personally probe the matter and submit a report at the earliest.
