Dismissed IAS officer Arvind Joshi, who was on the run for a year, joined his wife Tinoo Joshi in jail Tuesday after he surrendered and sought bail on the ground that he was suffering from blood cancer — an argument that was rejected by the court.

The 1979 IAS batch couple have been accused of amassing wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income. Last September, they did not turn up at Bhopal’s special court which was hearing the case, leading to issuance of arrest warrants against them, followed by lookout notices.

In January, Tinoo surrendered before the court and sought bail, citing health reasons. She had claimed that she was not absconding, but was undergoing medical treatment. The court, however, rejected her plea and sent her to judicial custody.

The IAS couple was suspended in February 2010 after Income Tax conducted raids at their official bungalow and found Rs 3 crore cash and details of investment worth hundreds of crore of rupees.

Arvind was then principal secretary (jails) and wife Tinoo principal secretary (women and child development).
Months later, the Lokayukta police raided the same premises and found disproportionate income to the tune of Rs 43 crore.
