The father of girl, publically thrashed by policemen in Tarn Taran,on Tuesday threatened to sit on a dharna if the accused policemen were not dismissed from service.

“I was beaten up all the way to the police station. I touched the feet of the policemen at the police station. Among them was a sub inspector and an under-training policeman. But they kept on torturing me. My signature was taken on a piece of paper under duress and I do not know what was written on it,” he said in his village,Usma. He had retired as a havildar from 1 Sikh Light Infantry

He also alleged that the policemen put his son’s face in the toilet when he objected to his sister being taken to the police station. “We want all accused cops to be dismissed from service, else we will sit on a dharna,” the father said, adding that the policemen had stolen Rs 18,000 from his pocket.

The girl was reportedly subjected to eve-teasing while she and her family were attending a wedding at Punjab Palace on Goindwal road. She had claimed that some taxi drivers had passed lewd comments against her and even threatened to sexually assault her. The police resorted to lathicharge after she,her brother and father approached a nearby police post, the girl said.

The video footage of the girl being beaten up by the policemen was captured by her cousin on his camera. “I was filming when the police were beating up my uncle. Then suddenly my cousin (victim) intervened to save her father and policemen started thrashing her as well,” the cousin said.

He added: “It all started after a couple of taxi drivers passed some lewd comment against my sister and she retaliated by hurling an abuse. Her eve-teasers demanded that she apologise. Following this, the police arrived and my uncle started explaining the incident to them. But they used foul language and started misbehaving with him. Provoked,my uncle beat up the policemen.”

“More policemen came and started beating him up. After I had shot the video,I returned to Punjab Palace. The policemen also came and started beating me up. They took away my camera. But luckily I found that footage intact when I got my camera back,” he said.

Meanwhile, the victim,in her complaint, had accused drivers Sahib Singh and Shoshi for eve teasing. She had also accused 17 to 19 policemen. “They (policemen) threatened that I would be molested after being taken to police station,” the girl alleged.

When contacted,Tarn Taran SSP Kamaljit Singh Dhillon said: “SP (Traffic) Ranbir Singh has been directed to probe the case.” He added that police will also probe the allegations that the policemen had used casteist remarks against the victims and put the brother’s face in the toilet.
