Close on the heels of BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s remark that diamond merchants in Mumbai run the risk of receiving notices from the Income-Tax department for hosting him,tax officials carried out search operations at offices of several diamond merchants in the city.

While the I-T department sources did not confirm the operation,Bharat Diamond Bourse chairman Anoop Mehta said that two merchants were raided by the I-T department. “It seems they searched various companies floated by these two groups,” Mehta said. “This raid or search has nothing to do Narendra Modi coming to the Diamond Bourse on Monday,” he added. He said that what Narendra Modi said at the Diamond Bourse function was in jest.
