The Delhi Police has denied permission for Ramdev-Anna Hazare joint day-long protest, proposed for June 3,on the ground that Jantar Mantar cannot accommodate the huge crowd expected to join in.

Police have told the organisers that with Ramdev and Hazare coming together, more than 5,000 would turn up at the venue, which cannot hold so many people.

Ramdev had proposed the protest on the anniversary of police crackdown on his supporters at Ramlila Maidan last year.

Ramdev has not applied for a permission for Ramlila grounds in Central Delhi.

Police have now called the organisers on Monday afternoon for a meeting to discuss the strength of the gathering, apart from other factors.

Initially,Ramdev had planned to go on protest alone.

“Earlier, when they came for the permission they had said the strength would not exceed 5,000. If there is a joint fast, then there will be a chaos at Jantar Mantar. Our senior officers did simple mathematics. There will be at least 500 to 600 mediapersons — including drivers, technicians, etc. There will also be numerous OB vans. The gathering will make it impossible for the protest to go on peacefully at Jantar Mantar,” said a police source.

Additional CP (New Delhi) K C Dwivedi said,“We have been communicating with the organisers. Earlier, they told us that it would be 5,000,but it appears that the number will be higher. A gathering of more than 5,000 is not possible at Jantar Mantar, they will be asked to choose another venue.”
