Former union rural development minister Jairam Ramesh called on his successor Gopinath Munde on Thursday, two days after the latter took charge. Ramesh made the courtesy call to Munde in the ministry itself. The two leaders had also spoken on the phone after Munde took charge, with Ramesh appreciating the new minister’s statements and focus on sanitation and other key schemes.
What is intended to resolve a ticklish issue sometimes throws up an equally engimatic solution. Take for instance, the distribution of Rajya Sabha members to Telangana and the residual state of Andhra Pradesh following bifurcation. A draw of lots to decide the fate of the people elected against 18 Upper House seats from the undivided state on Friday led to the allocation of Renuka Chowdhury, T Devender Goud and K Keshava Rao, rooted in Telangana, to Andhra Pradesh. Imagine the plight of Rao, who belongs to the TRS. As if this is not bad enough, these members will now have to spend their MPLAD money in the state to which they had been allotted.

Amidst a buzz that the new government may replace several Governors in coming days, a series of ‘courtesy calls’ were made on PM Narendra Modi at South Block on Friday. These included the Governors of Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, J&K and Manipur. The buzz is that the government is having a relook at the list of Governors, especially those appointed by the UPA government in its last days.

While there were concerns that the performance would be called off, the drill team braved the storm to ensure that the open air performance was held as scheduled.
