The CPI(M) led left front in West Bengal on Tuesday released its list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The Left Front will contest all 42 seats in which the CPI(M) alone will put up candidates in 32 seats.
One look at the list shows that the CPI(M) has failed to infuse fresh blood this time as compared to the 2006 Assembly polls when the party refused to give tickets for 108 sitting MLAs.
Party sources indicated that as the Trinamool Congress -Congress alliance is emerging as a big threat for the party, the top brass at Allimuddin Street decided not to change its old brigade. Only five of the sitting MPs were denied tickets this time whereas about 20 old faces have been included.
While CPI(M) has failed to infuse fresh blood, the RSP and forward block put up new candidates but CPI has followed CPI(M)’s line.
As expected, the list does not carry Somnath Chatterjee’s name. CPI(M) candidate Ram Chandra Dome will contest the elections in place of the former speaker from Bolpur (Bolpur was declared as a reserved constituency after delimitation). Interestingly,CPI(M) has pitted Mriganka Bhattacharya,a local level leader to contest Pranab Mukherjee in Jangipur.
