High drama was witnessed in the office of the newly elected mayor of Yamunanagar Municipal Corporation in Haryana on Monday when the councillors and their supporters came to blows over the seating arrangement in the mayor’s office. A woman councillor, who intervened, was also assaulted. The entire incident took place in front of Mayor Saroj Bala,a Congress leader.

The incident took place at 11.40 am when Senior Deputy Mayor Pawan Bittu (BJP),Deputy Mayor Rampal (INLD) and a few councillors — including BJP’s Sangeeta Singhal and Rakesh Tyagi and INLD’s Ajay Kumar — were holding a meeting in the mayor’s office.

As Saroj Bala arrived in her office with her husband Sewa Singh and a supporter Babloo, she found Bittu sitting in her chair. Babloo objected to this and started abusing Bittu. When others present in the room asked him to mind his language,Babloo called his supporters and the ruckus began. He was allegedly joined by Congress councillor Devender Rana.

Nearly a dozen supporters of Bala barged into her office and started manhandling Bittu and Tyagi. A Yamunanagar resident Nitin Kapoor, who had come to the mayor’s office to lodge a complaint on sanitation issues, was also badly assaulted. When Singhal intervened, the mob beat her up — she was repeatedly slapped and punched.

The entire drama was caught on camera as mediapersons were also present at the spot. The police were informed.

“All injured were taken to the hospital but nobody has received any serious injuries. Reports show simple blunt injuries, since no weapons were used. We have received complaints from both the sides and are verifying the facts. We will record the statements of all those involved in the act,” said SHO Ajit Kumar of Yamunanagar City police station.

When contacted, the mayor said: “Pawan Bittu has made it a habit to sit on my chair. I had told him several times in the past few days not to do so,but he deliberately does so to instigate me and my supporters. Today when I asked him to vacate my chair and sit on his,he started misbehaving and attacked me. Supporters from both the sides then entered into a clash. I tried my best to pacify them.”

Bittu, however, claimed: “This is nothing but high handedness on part of the mayor and her supporters. They do not want a democratic system to function. Mayor’s rowdy supporters kept on assaulting us and she did not utter a single word. We have lodged a complaint and will not spare such criminals who even attacked a woman councillor.”

Singhal, who had contested for the post of mayor but lost to Bala by one vote, said: “Is this the way a woman is treated in our society? I had no role to play in this. I just asked them to behave properly, but they targetted me and attacked me. There is no law in this state and Congress supporters have become criminals.”
