Cops shot at as they try to stop burglars

Two police personnel were injured when a group of around 15 burglars shot at them and attacked them with iron rods.

Two police personnel were injured when a group of around 15 burglars shot at them and attacked them with iron rods. While Constable Mahender sustained a bullet injury in the abdomen,Head Constable Om Prakash was beaten up with an iron rod.

The two policemen,from Narela station,were patrolling the Bawana area of Shahbad Dairy on Saturday night when they spotted the burglars at a scrap yard in Sector-5,Bawana.

Police said the personnel called for back-up and three more policemen joined them soon. The police party reached the scrap yard and fired in the air,allowing the policemen to note that there were around 14-15 burglars.

According to police,the burglars were told to surrender,but they fired at the police team.

“Our officials raised the alarm and ran to the spot. They caught one member of the gang,but the others began to shoot at the police party. The three other personnel were also injured as they were beaten by the burglars,” said a police officer.

“Even though a bullet pierced the abdomen of Constable Mahender,he showed exemplary courage and held onto one of the robbers. Later,he fell unconscious,” the officer said.

The police team also resorted to return firing in self-defence.

Mahender was rushed to Ambedkar Hospital,Om Prakash is recuperating at Balaji Hospital. Doctors at the hospitals said their condition is stable.

Hours after the attack,police launched a massive manhunt for the burglars and arrested seven accused,who were trying to escape to Haryana,police said.

Police refused to reveal the names of those arrested,saying the operation was in progress.

“These robbers are criminals who have come from Haryana. They had planned to commit a major robbery because they had come in a three-wheeler vehicle. The seven we arrested revealed that they were planning to take the stolen scrap in the same vehicle. The other gang members fled in the vehicle. We are on the lookout for them,” said a police officer.
