A constable of Orissa’s anti-Maoist strike force — District Voluntary Force (DVF) — shot himself in Koraput district after killing five people, including his wife’s parents and relatives, on Monday evening.
Inspector General of south-western range Y K Jethwa said the DVF constable Narendra Kandapan shot dead his father-in-law Jalandhar Samarlia, mother-in-law Hemalata Samarlia, brother-in-law Mithun Samarlia, niece Rachana Samarlia and a driver in a fit of rage, and later shot himself at his Mining Colony residence. His wife and their two-year-old daughter managed to escape.
Police sources said, Kandapan’s wife had filed a rape case against him before they got married. Kandapan was later relaesed from jail after she withdrew the charges. Four years ago, Kandapan married her, but reportedly he always had a grudge against his wife for lodging the case.
Sources said Kandapan Monday fought with his wife, beat her up and locked her and his daughter in a room. His wife called up her parents for help. “As soon as his in-laws arrived at his house, Kandapan started firing indiscriminately at them from his AK-47 rifle killing all of them on the spot. Later, he turned the gun on himself,” the police said.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.
