Factionalism in Haryana Congress took an ugly turn on Tuesday when supporters of Excise and Taxation Minister Kiran Choudhry manhandled state party chief Phool Chand Mullana’s supporters in Naraul. The reason: The banners of the party meeting did not include the picture of Choudhry’s daughter and local MP Shruti Choudhry.

During the meeting,Choudhry’s supporters interrupted Mullana’s speech by climbing on the dais and entering into a clash with other party workers present there. All this happened in the presence of AICC general secretary Asha Kumari, who also looks after party affairs in Haryana. Chief Parliamentary Secretary Rao Dan Singh was also present on the occasion.

Trouble started moments after Mullana began his address. A youth, claiming to be Choudhry’s staunch supporter, climbed the dias and interrupted Mullana by asking him why local MP Shruti Choudhry’s picture was not included on the banner put up on the stage.

Former MLA Radhey Shyam Sharma also alleged that Choudhry was not helping his supporters in Nangal area. Claiming that tubewell connections in at least five villages were not being issued at Choudhry’s behest,he demanded that Mullana and Asha Kumari take up these issues with the party high command.

The ruckus continued for over 20 minutes. Despite repeated appeals made by Mullana and Rao Dan Singh on the microphone, supporters of Choudhry and others present kept on manhandling each other. It was only after police personnel present on the spot intervened that the groups started dispersing from the venue.

Following this,Asha Kumari reprimanded unruly Congress supporters on the microphone. “If any party worker has any grievance,he should raise it in a disciplined manner. Every worker’s grievance will be heard and redressed, but this kind of an act of indiscipline will not be tolerated at any cost…”

Mullana, meanwhile, gave in and told the gathering that he will ensure that Shruti’s picture are displayed on the party banners.

Shruti is the Lok Sabha MP from Bhiwani-Mahendergarh. For some time now,the Congress has been trying to make inroads in the area without Kiran, who holds tremendous political clout there.
