Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly,Sunil Jakhar,on Monday launched a Congress campaign to register unemployed youth in Punjab by leading a group of youth to get their names registered at the employment office in Abohar.

Jakhar said the Congress will seek a special debate on the unemployment issue in the next Vidhan Sabha session. He further said that the SAD-BJP alliance retained power by promising a Rs 1,000 monthly unemployment allowance but,he added,Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal backtracked when the matter was raised in the Vidhan Sabha.

The CLP will mount pressure on the government by raising the issue in the Assembly with the Speaker’s permission,Jakhar said.

The party will urge the government to remove the ban on recruitment in all its departments, boards, corporations and aided educational institutions,Jakhar said.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Congress drive, the ruling SAD on Monday strongly condemned the “drama” enacted by Jakhar and described it as exploitation of the sentiments of unemployed youth from the remote areas of Punjab. It added that unemployment was a gift of successive Congress-led governments at the Centre.
