The Congress celebrated its 130th Foundation Day on Sunday as the party marked the occasion in a low-key manner. Party president Sonia Gandhi unfurled the party flag at its 24, Akbar Road headquarters in the presence of many senior leaders, but vice-president Rahul Gandhi did not attend the early morning function.
Established in 1885, the Congress has seen its political fortunes slide this year. After facing a rout in the Lok Sabha elections, the party has lost a string of assembly elections.
Most of the senior leaders including former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, senior leaders A K Antony and Sheila Dikshit and general secretaries Janardan Dwivedi and Ambika Soni were present as Sonia Gandhi unfurled the party flag. None of the leaders could explain the reason for Rahul’s absence.
Asked about government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, Sonia said the Congress has not got the mandate. “Others will have to form the government,” she said.
