National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Mamta Sharma seems to have found a novel solution to alcoholism. She has asked all states to “consider” declaring Tuesday as a weekly holiday for liquor shops,as it is an auspicious day according to Hindu mythology.

Her demi-official letter (copy of which is with The Indian Express) addressed to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal stated that she was forwarding a request made to this effect by a Delhi-based NGO,which is working towards getting liquor shops in Delhi closed on Tuesdays.

“According to Hindu mythology,Tuesday is considered to be an auspicious day. Even barber and meat shops are closed on this day… Moreover, alcoholism is considered as a family disease and an alcoholic can totally disrupt family life and cause harmful effects that can last a lifetime,” Sharma wrote. She added: “Alcoholism is responsible for more family problems than any other single cause (sic) and one of the every four families has problems with alcohol. It effects each member of the family — from the unborn to the alcoholic’s spouse — and its far reaching effects result in not only physical problems for him but also may result in physical and psychological problems for other members of the family.”

In its letter to Sharma, the NGO pointed out that that liquor shops have no weekly off and according to “law”,every work place has one day off in the week.
