The CBI on Thursday filed a closure report in the death of two teenage cousins in Badaun, ruling out murder and rape as earlier suspected and concluding that it was a case of suicide.
“A closure report has been filed in the Badaun case today in the court of Special Judge Anil Kumar, Badaun. It has been registered and notices have been issued to the complainants. The matter has been listed on January 6, 2015,” said a CBI official.
The CBI had recently said that questioning of over 200 people, along with results of 40 scientific reports, had helped it conclude that the girls committed suicide.
The elder of the two minor girls had an intimate relationship with the main accused Pappu Yadav, and it was during an evening meeting between the two, when they were spotted by a relative of the girls, triggering the events leading to double suicide, the CBI had found.
The girls, who were first cousins, were found hanging from a mango tree near their village on May 28. Based on their autopsy, it was initially believed that the girls were sexually assaulted and hanged. The girls’ families had also alleged that they were kidnapped and murdered by five youth from the village, including three brothers and two police constables Chhatrapal and Sarvesh Yadav. All five were arrested and the policemen were also discharged from service.
But, the CBI officials had said the agency found that the post-mortem conducted by doctors in UP and the investigation by the state police were faulty.
