In a major bureaucratic reshuffle,Thane municipal commissioner R A Rajeev was appointed principal secretary of the environment department Tuesday. Its a new post as till now the department had a secretary.

Six other IAS officers were also given new responsibilities. More transfers are likely in the next couple of days.

Rajeev (52) is an officer of the 1987 batch. He was earlier joint secretary of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

As head of Thane Municipal Corporation,he had a running feud with MLA Pratap Sarnaik. He also received flak after the Lucky Compound building collapse in Mumbra that claimed 72 lives.

Rajeev takes over from secretary Valsa Nair Singh,who has been made additional metropolitan commissioner,MMRDA.

Both the environment department and MMRDA are implementing big-ticket infrastructure projects.

Ashwini Kumar,principal secretary revenue (appeal),has been made a member of Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission,while law secretary S M Deshpande becomes secretary of the general administration department (1).

Santosh Kumar,who recently returned from a foreign training programme,has been made member-secretary of Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran,N N Kerkatta head of Maharashtra Agricultural Competitiveness Project and R L Mopalwar divisonal commisioner for Konkan.
