A group of armed assailants shot at three brothers at Kot village in Jhajjar late on Monday night. While one of the brothers died, two others sustained severe injuries.

According to preliminary investigations conducted by the police, rivalry between two liquor cartels could be the motive behind the shootout. Three brothers — Narayan,Prakash and Chand — were attacked by around 15 to 20 armed assailants from the same village.

Police said families of Ramkishan and Parmanand — all residents of Kot — had been involved in clashes against each other in the past as well. Initially, both the groups were in liquor business. While Ramkishan’s sons are still in the same business,Parmanand’s sons have stopped selling liquor and got into the confectionary trade. However, both families still nursed old grudges.

On Monday afternoon,Ramkishan’s sons and relatives had entered into a scuffle with Parmanand’s sons and family members on the outskirts of the village. Many people from both the groups had sustained injuries in the clash.

Later in the evening,Ramkishan’s sons — accompanied by their associates — reached Parmanand’s residence and attacked his family. Parmanand’s sons Narayan,Prakash and Chand were targeted.

“While Narayan died,Prakash and Chand sustained severe injuries in the attack. All the accused managed to escape, while we have arrested three accused. Raids are being conducted in many parts of Jhajjar and neighbouring districts to arrest the accused,” a police officer said.
