BRICS Leads in Power Usage

Three BRICS nations figure in the top eight energy consuming countries globally and account for over 30% of total energy consumed. While India’s energy consumption has been on a rise and is more than that of Germany and is largely dependent upon thermal energy, the Centre is now focussing on increasing consumption of clean energy. It has set a target of 1,75,000 MW for clean energy installations by 2022 up from 33,000 MW as of now. Of these, 1,00,000 MW would be solar power, 60,000 MW wind power, 10,000 MW from biomass and 5,000 MW from small hydroelectric projects.
