Three BRICS nations figure in the top eight energy consuming countries globally and account for over 30% of total energy consumed. According to the data available on bricsforum.org, while China comes on top with 20.26% of the world’s energy consumption, Russia and India come at third and fourth position with 5.75 and 4.36 % of the world’s consumption respectively. USA occupies the second spot with 19%.
While India’s energy consumption has been on a rise and is more than that of Germany and is largely dependent upon thermal energy, the Centre is now focussing on increasing consumption of clean energy. It has set a target of 1,75,000 MW for clean energy installations by 2022 up from 33,000 MW as of now. Of these, 1,00,000 MW would be solar power, 60,000 MW wind power, 10,000 MW from biomass and 5,000 MW from small hydroelectric projects.
