The body of a newborn girl was found near a Rapid Metro station on Mehrauli-Gurgaon road late on Sunday night.

According to police,a PCR call informed the DLF Phase 2 police station that an infant was found dead at a junkyard near DLF City Court around 9 pm on Sunday. A group of shopkeepers and residents gathered at the spot as a foul smell was emanating from the area and found the body. The baby is said to be just a day old.

Investigating officer Dev Dutt told The Indian Express that the infant was wrapped in a cloth. “The actual cause of death will be known after the post-mortem examination which will be carried out on Tuesday,” Dutt said.

Vikas Kaushik,SHO of DLF Phase 2 police station, said: “The body was brought to the mortuary on Sunday, but a post-mortem examination could not be carried out. A case under IPC Section 315 (act done with intent to prevent child being born alive or to cause it to die after birth) and 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of body) has been registered in the police station. We are trying to establish communication with hospitals in Gurgaon to find out where the baby was born, but to locate the parents in such cases is generally tough. Unfortunately, there are no witnesses, only a passerby who saw the body informed shopkeepers and the police.”

According to police data, about 11 cases of infants being abandoned have been recorded in 2013 so far,of which four are girls and seven are boys as compared to just seven cases (five girls and two boys) in 2012.
