BJP attacks Antony for hiding ‘truth’ about soldiers’ killing at LoC

Antony said there's no compromise regarding defence and protection of country's integrity.

3:45 pm: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Ravishankar Prasad alleged that the truth concerning the killing of Indian soldiers at the Line of Control (LoC) was hidden by Union Defence Minister A K Antony. The BJP also questioned Antony’s statements saying he should have explained the decision to change his statement.

3:25 pm: The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned for the day after uproar over Defence Minister A K Antony’s statement over the killing of Indian soldiers.

3:20 pm: Indian Army Chief General Bikram Singh fails to go to Poonch,where the ceasefire violation by Pakistan took place,because of bad weather,said reports.

2:21 pm: Member of the Congress party on Wednesday protested outside the High Commission of Pakistan in the national capital,shouting slogans against the neighbouring country.

2:17 pm: The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned till 3 PM after uproar over Defence Minister AK Antony’s statement on killing of Indian soldiers.

1.22 pm: Top military officials of Pakistan and India speak on hotline to lower tension after the killing of five Indian soldiers along LoC in Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir.

1.15 pm: Defence Minister A K Antony meets Prime Minister Manmohan Singh amidst the conflict over his statement of the killing of five Indian soldiers by Pakistan.

1.05 pm: Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L K Advani makes a statement on the issue of killing of Indian soldiers along the Line of Control (LoC),saying this is no time for talks with Pakistan. He also pointed to the “discrepancy” in the statements issued by the Defence Ministry and A K Antony in Parliament.

12.25 pm: According to reports,there has been heavy exchange of fire between the Indian and the Pakistani army along the Line of Control (LoC). Reports said that at least two Pakistani soldiers were injured in the firing.

12.18 pm: Defence Minister A K Antony made a brief statement in the Rajya Sabha,saying “When making a statement,I have to be careful and therefore I made the statement I did.”

Addressing the Rajya Sabha,the Defence Minister said,”I made statement on basis of whatever information I had. Will get back to Parliament after Army Chief’s visit to Jammu…There is no compromise regarding defence and protection of country’s integrity.”

12.10 pm: The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm shortly after it resumed after being adjourned till noon over the LoC killings. The Rajya Sabha was also adjourned for another 15 minutes.

12.05 pm: Congress leader Ajay Maken takes on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Twitter. He posted a tweet saying,”BJP talking about killing of Jawans shld also remember the muted response&killing of 16 BSF soldiers at Bangladesh borders in Apr 2001.”

The former Union Sports Minister further blamed the policies of the BJP for the failure of Agra summit,Lahore Declaration and Kargil infiltration.

11.45 am: Indian Army chief General Bikram Singh pays tribute to the martyred soldiers. The Army chief is slated to take a stock of the security situation in the area.

11.40 am: Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha adjourned till noon after Opposition creates uproar contradictory statements by Defence Minister A K Antony and Army on killing of Indian soldiers.

11.30 am: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded an apology from Defence Minister A K Antony over his statement on the LoC killings.

A day after five Indian soldiers were killed near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir in an ambush by the Pakistani troops,the bodies of the martyrs are slated to be taken to their native states on Wednesday. Bihar Chief Minister has also announced a state funeral for four slain soldiers who hail from the state. The Bihar Chief Minister has also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family of each soldier.

This comes even as the government is put under pressure by the opposition parties,including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),to respond aggressively to the act.

In a deadly cross-border attack,five Indian Army personnel were killed and a sixth was injured by a group which the government said comprised “20 heavily armed terrorists along with persons dressed in Pakistan army uniforms” near the Line of Control (LoC) early on Tuesday morning.
