Haryana’s main opposition party INLD Tuesday termed the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government as “anti-farmer” and alleged that it has cheated and misled the peasants by taking blank cheques from them and then sending them to jails when the said cheques bounced.

INLD senior leader and MLA from Ellanabad Abhay Singh Chautala and party state president Ashok Arora said the cheques were taken in advance at the time of giving agriculture loans to the farmers. “The mortgage papers of their land and tractors were also taken. Now the government is making false announcements by saying that farmers’ lands will neither be auctioned on late payment of loans nor would they be sent to jail for defaulting on loans,” they said.

“In reality, around 25,000 farmers have been declared as defaulters. Balbir Singh,a resident of Dhurala village in Ambala, has been sentenced to jail for one year after his cheque bounced and he failed to repay the loan amount. More than one dozen farmers from the the same village are facing similar cases in courts,” Chautala added.

The leaders said farmers had suffered loss due to last month’s floods in Yamunanagar,Karnal,Panipat and Sonepat districts,“but the government has turned a blind eye to their plight”.

“There are some villages in Yamunanagar district where fertile land has been completely washed off. The Hooda government, which calls itself as pro-farmer,has not cared about the farmers’ plight and should suitably compensate them,” Chautala demanded.

He alleged,in the name of flood protection measures, huge sums of money were “siphoned off every year and there was no actual work done on the ground.”

“Instead of suitably compensating them, the Hooda government recently rubbed salt on their wounds by giving cheques of Re 1,2 and 3 in the name of compensation,” they said.

However, asked to comment on the allegations,Hooda said the government has decided that neither the farmers’ land would be auctioned nor would they be put behind bars.

Meanwhile, the INLD leaders also demanded that Haryana’s Sports Minister Sukhbir Kataria,an accused in the fake voters scandal be dismissed from the Cabinet. “Since a Gurgaon court has issued non-bailable warrants against Kataria,he does not deserve to continue in his position. The Hooda government should immediately sack him from the ministerial berth,” Chautala added.
