The Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday claimed more than 50 lakh persons had become members of the party during the first 12 days of the ‘Main Bhi Aam Aadmi’ campaign. Figures issued by the party show that the highest enrolment was in UP, followed by Delhi. The campaign waives the Rs 10 membership fee ordinarily required, and the party is aiming to reach one crore members by January 26.
Gopal Rai, part of the Political Affairs Committee of the party supervising the all India campaign said, “33.5 lakh persons have joined by filling forms at party offices and membership camps all over the country. A further 10.8 lakh people have joined by missed calls or messages, and 6.45 lakh people have joined online.”
While close to 12 lakh people registered in UP, Delhi added 5.82 lakh members during the drive and Chandigarh and Goa have the lowest membership with not a single online applicant so far.
Rai said the party ensured there could be no inflated numbers. “Only one person can register per mobile phone number so there can be no duplication. We have checks in place. We are sure we will reach our target of one crore members by January 26,” he said.
