The Punjab Police will now be permanently deploying 1,400 commandos, who were withdrawn some time back,on field duty in the state. To maintain law and order in the state during the forthcoming festive season,5,246 personnel from police training schools and ten companies each of Punjab Armed Police (PAP) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will be deployed.

Freed from security of VVIPs,these commandos are being sent back to the districts for field duty. With this, not only the special force meant to counter terrorism will be restored to its basic duty, but the district police units, which were facing acute staff shortage, will also be strengthened. The state police has formulated a new security policy, where in PAP and IRB personnel will be deployed on security duty.

Apart from this,50 highway patrol vehicles have been re-located in major towns,so that they cover major areas,as they will now be assigned two tasks – crime control and highway traffic management.

The ten companies of PAP and CRPF being deployed in the state will assist the district police and police commissioners in their respective jurisdictions,as nakas will be put up across the state.

Ludhiana Police Commissioner Ishwar Singh said,“Around 800 police personnel will be deployed in the city during the festive season. Police personnel will work in two shifts – 7 am to 3 pm and 4 pm to 10.30 pm.”
