3 security personnel, 2 militants killed

Security personnel have launched search operations in the neighbouring areas.

Three security personnel — an Army junior commissioned officer and two police personnel — and two suspected foreign militants were killed in a night-long encounter in Kupwara district of north Kashmir on Tuesday. Four security personnel and a woman are reported to have been injured.

According to officials, the Special Operations Group of the J&K Police and Army launched a joint operation in Zonireshi village in Chowkibal area on Monday night following information that some militants were hiding there.

During the search operation, the security personnel came under fire. Additional forces were rushed to the area and the operation continued through the night. In the morning, the forces launched an assault on the house where the militants were hiding and recovered their bodies.

Confirming the deaths, DIG, Police, North Kashmir, Ghulam Hassan Bhat said, “The operation has ended and efforts are being made to identify the slain militants.”

Sources said the police had information that more militants were hiding in the area. Security personnel are reported to have launched search operations in the neighbouring areas. Zonireshi village is located close to the LoC.

Meanwhile, in another attack in Anantnag, unidentified militants shot at a policeman in the market and snatched his rifle. No group has claimed responsibility.
