A youth was shot at by two motorcycle-borne men when he tried to stop them from harassing two girls he knew. The incident happened at around 7 pm on Thursday in the Untkhana Chowk area. The injured youth died while being treated at the hospital.

The police launched a manhunt and at around 11 pm found three persons who resembled the description of Untkhana suspects on a bike at Jagnade Chowk, about 2 km away from the place where the shooting happened.

When the police tried to nab them, they fired at the police injuring one of the four personnel. The police fired back, chased and caught them but two of them wriggled out of the police clutches. But the police got hold of one of them who was injured in the cross-fire. Four desi pistols were recovered.

It is gathered that those arrested had also taken away vehicles of some passersby at gunpoint. There were unconfirmed reports that another firing incident took place at Teka Naka area but JCP Sanjay Saxena denied it.

He said the gang involved was led by history-sheeter Raja Ghouse, infamous for extortion from property dealers and jewellers.

The JCP refused to comment when asked if the firearms are getting available easily in the city. “Raja is known for habitual use of firearms. We have solid leads about them and we are on the job,” he said.
