An undertrial, arrested for possession of marijuana, escaped from police custody on Friday while undergoing treatment at Sassoon Hospital. Bundgarden police later arrested him near his house in Bibwewadi.

Kishor Madhukar Londhe of Shelkevasti in Bibwewadi was arrested on July 16 for possessing 2 kg marijuana. The same day he was presented in a city court which remanded him in police custody till Saturday. Police said when he was brought out of the court he complained of stomach and chest pain and was thus admitted in ward number 14 at Sassoon Hospital. Assistant Police Commissioner Mohammed Makandar said,“As the accused was in police custody,he was not taken to the special ward for jail inmates. He was handcuffed to the bed and two constables were posted. Londhe escaped around 6 am when one constable was asleep and the other one had gone to washroom.”

Inspector (Crime) Satish Nikam of Bundgarden police station said,“As his hands are thin,he managed to release his hand from the handcuff.” Immediately after he escaped, three police teams were pressed into action to search for him.

Police sources said they had a tip-off that Londhe had gone to his home.
