Two ashram school kids die after snakebite

Two children died while four are battling for life after a snake went on a biting spree in an ashram school at Makardhokda village in Gondia district.

Two children died while four are battling for life after a snake went on a biting spree in an ashram school at Makardhokda village in Gondia district.

The children were asleep when the incident occurred.

“It happened around 4 am on Thursday,” Hariram Madavi,project officer,Tribal Development,told The Indian Express.

Tomesh Bartu Thatmorra and Bhojraj Dhunau Marai,both aged six,died while Mahesh Hiralal Uike (11),Nitin Zaduram Puram (13),Nutan Ramvilas Tumreki (10) and Karimdev Omprakash Sonar (12) are in a critical condition at a private hospital in Gondia.

The government-aided school,Swami Ramkrishna Adivasi Ashram Shala,is run by Krishna Sahyogi Tantra Shikshan Sanstha,an educational institute headed by one Dhamsingh Yerne.

Asked if the children were sleeping on the floor,Madavi said,“Yes,there were around 175 students sleeping in a big hall.”

Asked if norms don’t provide for cots,he said,“No. They generally sleep on the floor. Under the norms,they are given a dari (carpet) to sleep on,a blanket and a bedsheet.”

On protection to the hall,he said,“It has a compound,but it is surrounded by forest.”
