BJP MP from Amritsar,Navjot Singh Sidhu,on Thursday lodged a complaint with the police demanding registration of a case against an unidentified person, for “fraudulently” opening a Facebook account in his name.

The account,www.facebook.com/NSSidhuOfficial,carries Sidhu and his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s photographs. Created in December 2011,it has more than 11,000 “likes” and 2,090 “talking about this”. The account carries Sidhu’s quotes and media reports about him. However, nothing defamatory has been posted in the account.

“This is a criminal act. There should be stringent laws to regulate this kind of thing. It took me 40 years to earn my name and reach where I am today. And now,a person creates a fake Facebook account and is posting Sidhuism and new coverage content as per his will. Tomorrow he can post abuses to (BJP president Nitin) Gadkariji or for that matter (Congress president) Sonia Gandhi,” Sidhu, who does not have a Facebook account, said.

He added: “I am not much conversant with the Internet and social networking sites. My wife rang me up today and said there was an account in my name. I then decided to lodge a complaint with police.”

Sidhu further said that someone had also created a fake twitter account in his name. The account,twitter.com/sidhuisms,which also claims to be the “official account” of Sidhu, has a tweet dated May 16 stating — “Friends, get connected with me on my Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/NSSidhuOfficial,suggesting that the same person had created both the accounts.
