Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday handed over to state vigilance bureau the probe regarding alleged embezzlement of funds issued from the discretionary funds of cabinet minister Gulzar Singh Ranike.
The investigation will be supervised by Chief Vigilance Director Suresh Arora and he have been asked to submit the complete investigation report within four weeks, a spokesman said.
The announcement came a day after the government said it would set-up a high-level probe into the matter.
Ranikes PA Sarbhdyal Singh has been accused of opening a number of bank accounts in 2011 in the name of dummy sarpanches and later an amount to the tune of Rs 1.15 crore was encashed by the PA.
The Congress has been pressing for dismissal of Ranike, who represents the Attari Assembly constituency, from the cabinet.
While addressing a public meeting organised by Nabha MLA Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, state Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh said the inquiry ordered by Badal was just eyewash aimed at shielding and protecting the minister. Claiming that the government was mired neck deep in corruption and implicating Congress workers was its only job now,Amarinder said that the inquiry against Ranike will be conducted by the same DSP who has been appointed by him (Ranike) only. Ranike must be immediately dropped from the cabinet and put behind bars, he added.
Minister of State for External Affairs and Amarinders wife Perneet Kaur too lashed out at the SAD for shielding a corrupt minister like Ranike.
Meanwhile,Leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar, demanded a CBI probe against Ranike. If the CM is really interested in a fair probe,he should first remove Ranike from the cabinet and then order a CBI probe. The police have done noting in the case in the last 16 months, Jakhar said.
In separate statements, former MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira and state Mahila Congress leader Nimisha Mehta also demanded a CBI inquiry. (PTI Inputs)
