NCP candidate is Mira-Bhayander mayor

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP),by winning the mayoral elections held on Tuesday,retained power in the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC).

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP),by winning the mayoral elections held on Tuesday,retained power in the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC). It had the supp\ort of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and former TADA accused Hitendra Thakur’s Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVS).

NCP MLA Gilbert Mendonca’s daughter and two-time corporator,Caitlin Pereira,was elected mayor. She defeated Sena candidate Prabhakar Mhatre.

Elections to the civic body in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR),held earlier this month,were closely contested between the Congress,NCP and Sena-BJP-RPI alliance. No clear majority emerged for any party. Though Congress and NCP did not form a pre-poll alliance,they joined hands after the results were declared.

A clear majority of 48 is required in the 95-seat municipal body. BJP won 29 seats,Sena 14,Congress 19,NCP 27,MNS one and BVS three. An Independent candidate also won the election.
