Deceased is younger brother of city Congress secretary Raman Thavkar

A jeweller was shot by two men in the Khankhoje Nagar area on Saturday. The incident occurred around 1 pm when the assailants came to the shop of Vijay Thavkar — younger brother of city Congress secretary Raman Thavkar — and started assaulting his help Prasad. When Vijay rushed to Prasad’s rescue,one of them shot him from point-blank range. A bullet hit Thavkar in the chest,killing him on the spot.

“Prasad is out of danger. He told us that the assailants came and started beating him. They just said ‘nikalo’ (give it) but didn’t take anything. We are checking both robbery and murder angles,” said Commissioner of Police Ankush Dhanvijay.

The car in which the unidentified men came was stolen from Sonegaon area on Friday night and the owner had registered a complaint on Saturday morning.

Police said they on the lookout for the duo.
