After the inspector general of police (Prison) was presented “siropa” (robe of honour) by former minister Bibi Jagir Kaur — lodged at the Kapurthala Modern Jail for abduction and forcible abortion case of her daughter Harpreet Kaur — the jail authorities defended the incident on the ground that the religious function was organised by the seven-member committee of prisoners of which Kaur is a member.

At the function held on Sunday, where several SGPC members and councillors were present,Kaur presented a siropa to IG (Prison) Jagjit Singh. Incidentally,Singh had probed the case of alleged VVIP treatment — like being provided a LCD television and a separate room — for Kaur during her stay at the Kapurthala jail in April. He had given a clean chit to the ex-minister.

Kapurthala Modern Jail Superintendent S P Khanna said: “Bibi presented the siropa on behalf of all prisoners. The siropa was supposed to be presented by a prisoner to the jail authorities. Bibi is also a prisoner. What is wrong if she presented it? Bibi has been involved in religious activities for decades, and used to head a religious dera before her conviction. Keeping her background in mind, the prisoners asked her to perform the duty on their behalf.”

Around 1,000 inmates, including 160 women, took part in the function. The basic purpose was to connect them to religion so they stay away from crime, claimed Khanna.
