Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray,51,underwent an angiography at a suburban Mumbai hospital on Monday after complaining of severe chest pain. While he will require further medical attention in the coming weeks following the discovery of three blockages including two major ones, warring cousin Raj not only cancelled a scheduled visit to Alibaug to visit him in hospital but also fuelled conjecture about the two Senas’ softening stand towards each other when the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena president drove Uddhav home in the evening.

Uddhav was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in Bandra around 7 am on Monday after he complained of breathlessness and chest pain. An angiography was performed soon after.

Hospital sources said he appeared to have suffered a mild heart attack and doctors immediately advised an angiography. They also said the angiogram showed three blockages in his heart. Of these, two are major and Uddhav may have to return to hospital in the next couple of days to undergo further procedures.

Estranged cousin Raj Thackeray, who was in Alibaug for a three-day workshop with his party’s elected representatives, rushed back to Mumbai on being informed of Uddhav’s admission. “Not much should be read into his visit. They may be at loggerheads in the political arena but they’re cousins who have grown up together,” a senior Shiv Sena leader said. Raj met his cousin briefly and left, only to return later in the evening.

Raj returned to the hospital around 5.45 pm and drove Uddhav out to ‘Matoshree’,the Thackerays’ residence in Bandra (East),in his silver Mercedes. Also present in the car were Raj’s wife Sharmila and his mother. The two cousins had last met in 2008 when Raj visited Matoshree to call upon an ailing Bal Thackeray on the pretext of returning a book. Monday was also the first time Raj met his uncle since. Ahead of the civic elections in February this year, the senior Thackeray had spelt out his dream of seeing the two cousins join hands in the future,to which Raj had responded that he would be willing to match one step forward from his uncle with a hundred steps of his own.

Uddhav was admitted to the ‘delux’ ICU on the sixth floor of the suburban hospital. Family members, including his son Aditya and wife Rashmi, were with him through the day.

“He was experiencing discomfort in his chest for the past few days,” said Dr Jalil Parkar, chest physician at Lilavati who was among those who attended to Uddhav on Monday. “While he can continue with his regular diet,he has been on medication for his chest discomfort which he has been advised to continue. Further course of action will be decided by his family and other doctors at the hospital.”

Earlier, senior Sena leader Manohar Joshi, told reporters outside Lilavati that Uddhav is out of danger. Mumbai Mayor Sunil Prabhu and corporator Rajul Patel were among his other political visitors. The state legislature, currently in session, emptied of all Sena MLAs around noon. While many of them camped outside the hospital, others waited at Matoshree. BJP leaders Gopinath Munde and Vinod Tawde visited Uddhav in Matoshree later in the evening.

During Uddhav’s ten-hour stay, the hospital turned into a fortress with intensive security patrolling on and outside the hospital premises. While security check points were placed at frequent intervals on all floors,no non-medical staff or visitors were allowed to the sixth floor.
