Mumbai-based Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Nayek is in the spotlight again in the aftermath of the ghastly Dhaka terror attack which killed over 20, mostly foreign nationals including an Indian. Two of the terrorists, who had attacked the upscale Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka on Friday night, are said to be followers of Zakir Nayek.

Zakir Nayek is a televangelist hugely popular in the Indian sub-continent with millions of followers globally. Fluent in English and Arabic, he can quote the Quran, chapter and verse. Nayek runs Peace TV which mostly beams his lectures on Islam and comparative religion.

Nayek is the president of Mumbai-based Islamic Research Foundation. Nayek’s profile on Peace TV website describes him as an international orator who ‘clarifies Islamic viewpoints and clears misconceptions about Islam, using the Quran, authentic Hadith and other religious scriptures as a basis, in conjunction with reason, logic and scientific facts.’

However, he has landed into many controversies in the past for his views on terror. In one of his speeches, Nayek had said that all Muslims should be terrorists. “I tell Muslims that every Muslim should be a terrorist. Terrorist means a person who terrorises. When a robber sees a policeman, he is terrified. So for a robber, a policeman is a terrorist. So in this context every Muslim should be a terrorist to the robber,” he had said in 2010.

His views on Osama bin Laden also angered many. He had said, “If Osama bin Laden is terrorising the enemies of Islam, I am with him. If he is terrorising America, the biggest terrorist, then I am with him.”

Nayek made international headlines when Britain and Canada denied him a visa. “Coming to the UK is a privilege, not a right and I am not willing to allow those who might not be conducive to the public good to enter the UK,” BBC had quoted then home secretary Theresa May as saying.

I am so sad to hear the news about Zakir Naik on Indian news channel. Again an innocent Muslim preacher and scholar being targeted in India. Zakir Naik has got nothing to do with terrorism. The main objectives of his speeches is to make Muslims learn to follow Islam the right way as described in Quran. Whatever he says the base is the verses from Quran. People are free to follow what they want. If someone from any organisation is watching his videos, it's not his fault. Just showing one sentence repeatedly on news channel without listening to w lecture and understanding what context it was said doesn't prove that he is linked to provocative speeches encouraging terrorism. People abide by the law of the country where they live in. If you live in India one follows. Indian laws, if you live in Saudi, one follows Islamic law. What laws are there in Quran were sent down by Allah and Zakir is just telling about those laws in his speeches. What problem has anyone got? No one shows provocative speeches of RSS on TV channels.lt;br/gt;These kind of news are responsible for rift between Hindus and Muslins provocations riots and loss of peace and harmony and reflect how much Muslims are unsafe in India.

Indic-religions share nothing with Non-Indic religions. Not philosophy, not teachings, not healing of soul, not self realization, not humanism, even direction of praying is different. The Indic religions share a common bond of humanism with modern societies of West and far east. The followers of Indic religions will make India join the group of developed nations by 2024 ....

Nimish, followers of Indic religions do not carry the burden of educating , modernizing or improving the lot of followers of "only true religion" . We should continue to focus on improving our own who feel a belonging to Bharat, it's culture, its philosophy.
