ONE PERSON died and two sustained injuries when a speeding Mercedes car hit a scooter from behind in Kolkata in the wee hours of Sunday. Following this, an angry mob damaged several cars inside a housing society in the city, where they suspected the offending driver stayed.

Police said that at around 3 am on Sunday, Avijit Pandey (24) — who was riding the scooter — Ramdev Yadav (22) and Mithilesh Yadav (25), who were riding pillion, were hit by a Mercedes on Hazra Road.

While Avijit was declared brought dead on arrival at SSKM Hospital, Ramdev and Mithilesh were released later on.

Around 9 am, a crowd of over 100 people, entered the ‘Fort Oasis’ apartment complex at Panditiya Road under Lake police station and ransacked several private cars. The mob assumed the Mercedes had entered the parking lot of the society after mowing down Avijit.

At 5 pm, as Avijit’s body was taken to Keoratala crematorium, his relatives and locals held a road blockade for about 15 minutes at Hazra crossing, demanding the arrest of the offender. Police later chased away the agitators. The blockade was lifted and the body taken to a crematorium.

Meanwhile, four persons have been arrested on charges of ransacking vehicles inside Fort Oasis. They have been identified as Shakti Singh (36), Rajesh Chawdhury (40), Amritlal Yadav (19) and Prakash Roy (43).
