ON A day the Congress came out in support of writers returning the Sahitya Akademi awards , party MP Shashi Tharoor Thursday took a different line and said writers are dishonouring the recognition.

Tharoor said he support the courage and conviction of the writers, but disagreed with their method of protest. “I strongly support and admire the values, conviction & courage of the writers who have stood for freedom of expression by returning their awards,” he tweeted.

“Still I regret this method of protest since award is recognition by independent body of intellectual, literary, creative or academic merit and should not be confused with the political issues of the day. The political fight must be fought but why dishonour this recognition?” he said.
