Responding to the report ‘Firms with ‘links’ to Virbhadra Singh, YSR family corner power projects in Karnataka’ (November 21), Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has written saying “I would like to state that my family members or myself do not have any links to any group of companies which has bagged power projects in Karnataka.
On the contrary, Shri Vakamulla Chandrashekhar, as businessman, may own hydro projects in various states. However, we are not linked to his companies.” He said the the allegations made by the BJP — of Singh’s family receiving kickbacks from firms owned by Chandrashekhar — “are baseless and it’s an attempt to tarnish my image with mala fide agenda”.
“It is evident from the fact that the BJP-led government at the Centre is pressurising and misusing the investigating agencies, particularly the CBI and Enforcement Directorate to harass their political opponents,” Singh said, adding that the case registered “against my family members and me” is “a glaring example” of “how low the BJP can stoop to victimise its political opponents”.
The Indian Express replies: The report only states that Vakamulla Chandrashekhar, whose links with Virbhadra Singh’s family are under probe, is one of the biggest beneficiaries of small hydel power contracts in Karnataka. We stand by the report.
