EVEN AS Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar has of late intensified efforts to increase the party’s base in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh with regular visits, RJD chief Lalu Prasad, Nitish’s Grand Alliance partner in Bihar, Tuesday made it clear that his party will not contest the UP Assembly elections next year.

Lalu also said that he has to take care of his “samdhi” Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. Mulayam’s grandnephew is married to Lalu’s youngest daughter.

Although the RJD had been hinting at not joining Nitish in contesting the UP elections, this is the first time Lalu has said it publicly.

“Hamara uddeshya RSS aur BJP ko desh se nastanabut karna hai (Our objective is to wipe out the RSS and BJP from the country).

RJD will strengthen the hands of secular forces in UP but will not contest the Assembly polls there,” he said.
